Tip of the Week: Disk Longevity

How often do you use CDs and DVDs? Maybe you use them to burn music CDs or perhaps you use DVDs to copy your favorite movies. I'm sure some of you use them to back up all the data on your computer too, right? No matter what you use them for, have you ever thought about how long they'll actually last? I mean, they can't last forever, can they? Well, keep reading to find out!

Over the years, there has been a lot of discussion on just how long CDs and DVDs actually last. It's gone from 100 years to 40 years and so on, all from the time they were first invented to when they became more popular to consumers, etc. This also varied once new uses for them came about (burning and back ups, for example). So, in this day and age, with all the new technology that keeps coming out, what do you think the final say is on the longevity of these discs?

Well, it's said that they will now last anywhere between five and 10 years. Now, that is quite a jump in time, but there are so many factors that go into that estimation. Depending on how well the disc was manufactured to begin with is a big one. It also depends on what you've used the CD or DVD for. If you've recorded material on them, how well that recording went through has a big say in how long the disc will last. And so on and so forth.

So, all in all, CDs and DVDs will last quite a long time for us, but it's still important to keep a close eye on them. If you start to notice some wear and tear on your discs, you may want to think about making new copies. If you don't, you may end up losing your information and no one wants that!
